What Is Breathwork?

Breathwork is badass. It is one of the most powerful body healing modalities in the world.

Breathwork expert Dan Brulé defines breathwork as: “The art and science of using breath awareness and breathing exercises for health, growth, and change in body, mind, and spirit.”

Breathwork is for everyone.

The list is long, but one of the coolest things about breathwork is that it is a necessity in our lives. It’s the quickest, simplest way to release anxiety, stress, and feelings of overwhelm. Our breath is our doorway in. Bringing awareness to our breath increases our quality of life.

Why Breathwork?

What types are there?

So many!

As a trauma-informed Certified Pause Breathwork Facilitator, I primarily focus on Pause Breathwork techniques.

You will learn both Integrative and Meditative breathwork patterns and blends.

Breathwork changed my life:

For me and so many others, a daily breathwork practice has become the gateway for self-improvement, self-healing, and even spiritual awakening.

I first discovered the work of my mentor, Samantha Skelly, and Pause Breathwork a few months before the major Covid 19 lockdown in March of 2020.

I hopped on a Zoom with Sam and many other strangers, listened, laid down, gently closed my eyes, and was guided along an 8-minute breathwork journey. I felt safe and supported and when I opened my eyes afterward, body trembling, tears flowing, feeling as though I had released months of stuck emotion, I knew I  needed this type of work in my life. I also knew that my clients would benefit greatly from this body healing modality.

Later that week, I signed on to become a Pause Breathwork Facilitator. This decision was a full-body YES for me. I didn't have the money or the time, but I decided to go inward and listen as opposed to stressing about the how. Those 8 months, through Covid, rocked my freakin world. I dove deeper into my own trauma than ever before. I pushed myself out of my personal and professional comfort zone. I was able to do this work because of the safety I was creating within my own body AND because I was being fully supported by my mentors, peers, children, and far away friends. We were on this journey together.

When you decide to explore your world, through breathwork with me, I have got you. I will guide, support, and hold the space for you. Through our work together, you will be reminded that it is you who holds the power to shift, change, heal and create the life you are most deserving of. When we use our breath as a solid anchor, we can ride out the storms that come and go in our daily lives.

Through breathwork, I have regained so much of my own power. I handle my stress levels better. I find my sensations of anxiety and depression dissolve quickly. I show up for myself, my 3 children, my clients, and my students more authentically than ever before. I have found a calm amongst the collective chaos that seems to be our world right now. Breathwork allows me to slow down and just be right here (place your hands on your heart space here). Breathwork has opened doors to healing and long-lasting transformation, which honestly, even as a mental health professional, have completely surprised me. Let's just say they didn't teach breathwork in graduate school.

What is breathwork and why make it a priority in your life?

Simply, breathwork is when we bring awareness and intention to our breathing.

As we get more familiar with our breath and learn new ways in which to shift it, adding power, switching up the speed, the depth, and pattern, all kinds of amazing things start to transpire. The more we practice, the more we embody, the clearer we get, the stronger and more confident we become, with that comes things like setting boundaries, expressing personal needs and desires, you following me here? Systemic change within our own being will change the landscape of our inner world, therefore positively influencing the world around us. Breathwork really is that powerful.

Ever notice what's going on with your breath when feelings of stress and anxiety increase? Most likely the breath is from our chest, it's short and tense. Just by noticing our breath patterns, we start to shift and repattern our mind-body system to promote healing and form deeper, more meaningful connections to ourselves, our bodies, others, and the space in which we live.

According to CRC Health, “breathwork is a psychotherapeutic, meditative activity that involves the conscious alteration of natural breathing patterns. Breathwork has been associated with other body-centric practices, such as yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong.”

Breath is the foundation of yogic practices. You know how your yoga teacher mentions every few moments to “focus on your breath,” “remember to breathe,” “Stay with the breath,” and so on? Well, she/he/they are guiding you to the foundation of body consciousness. Breathwork is used to help reduce stress, clear the mind, focus on the present. Being guided and supported through breathwork journeys increases personal, psychological, and spiritual insights and awareness. When practicing breathwork, you get to create patterns of calm, centering, focus, safety, and trust. You can also release old conditioning caused by anger, fear, resentment, irritation, and trauma.

Why Breathwork?

Everybody breathes — it’s a fundamental part of being human. When we stop breathing, everything around us is rid of its importance. In so many parts of the world, the breath is seen as a first priority — we somehow missed that memo. Here’s the truth: over 90% of us are using less than 50% of our breathing capacity and by not taking in enough oxygen, we are not fueling our blood or bodies with sufficient energy. We are so often burnt out, over-medicated, exhausted, anxious, depressed, and feel disconnected from our own lives.

When we connect with our breath, we connect with our emotionality and our intuition. We connect to our own powerful voice that so often gets silenced by society. We connect with our bodies in a way that simply thinking doesn't allow. We have to FEEL into it if we want long-lasting healing.

Breathwork Modalities

There are so many modalities within the practice of breathwork ranging from holotropic, integrative, rebirthing, transformational, and more. I generally guide and coach using Pause Breathwork, which is the holotropic breathing modality. Holotropic breathwork involves controlling one’s breathing patterns to influence mental, emotional, and physical states. This is a wonderful type of breathwork for people at all stages of their breathwork journey. It is also a great option if you are someone (like myself) that has struggled with quieting the mind long enough to meditate.

Best Practices

Breathwork has the tendency to bring up thoughts, feelings, patterns, past traumas, ingrained experiences, and more. I always invite you to take good care of yourself before, during, and after you practice. Breathwork is a spiritual experience and deserves to be treated as such. As with most things in life, more practice = more benefits.

When you first begin breathwork, your fight or flight instincts will take over — don’t get upset, our brains are thousands of years old and only doing what they know to survive. But here’s the thing — we aren’t necessarily in a state of needing to fight quite so hard anymore. We are powerful beings that have the capacity to create, evolve, and heal our past traumas so we can live healthy, fulfilled, and meaningful lives.
